Oceanside at a glance
Oceanside is a South Shore hamlet separated from the ocean by Reynolds Channel, marsh islands and the Long Beach Barrier Island. It expanded south over swamps and marshes in the 1900s and built out further in the post-World War II housing boom, which left it more vulnerable to flooding. Hurricane Sandy in 2012 completely flooded the southern part of Oceanside, with water reaching as far north as Long Beach Road near Nathan's.
